The most commonly used filters tend to be hang-on filters and refugium. Hang-on filters are able to assist in the chemical and mechanical filtration whereas refugium helps in biological filtration.
Saltwater aquariums are not for the absolute beginners. It is advisable to have some sort of experience before setting one up. Initially it will be time consuming to get started, but the effort will be well worth it once the tank is fully set-up.
