Self Leadership - Sun Tzu’s Mentions The Importance Of Self Discipline
Are you like I used to be? You have a well defined goal, a plausible plan to reach it, you begin to implement the plan and… boom… things just stop and you never reach the goal? What is missing here?

Sun Tzu in “The Art of War” (the oldest known war manual, written more that 2500 years ago) explains that in order to succeed you need SELF DISCIPLINE. For instance, he writes that to predict the winner of a war you have to know;
(1) Which general has the most ability.
(2) Which army is better trained and stronger.
(3) Which side has the laws of nature on their side.
(4) Which army is more motivated.
(5) Which army has the most SELF DISCIPLINE.

In other words, it is not enough to have a good battle plan, a good general, and a strong well trained army to win a war. You need to also have self discipline to carry out the plan of action.

The million dollar question: “How can you become self disciplined?”

Unfortunately there is no easy answer to this question but there are some guidelines that will help you to have the self discipline to reach your goals.

*Observe what prevents you from reaching your goal. If you can’t stay on a diet because of late night binging of chocalote bars; DON’T FILL YOUR FREEZER WITH CHOCOLATE BARS. If you waste too much time surfing the web when you are writing on the computer UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER FROM THE MODEM.

*Observe what empowers you. If you get motivated by reading aritlces then READ ARTICLES. If good movies motivate you then WATCH INSPIRING MOVIES. If you get motivated by good speeches then search the web for podcasts that inspire YOU. (I just found a site empoweringmessages.com that has a variety of short inspiring speeches. Check it out to see if they inspire YOU)

*Keep the end goal in mind. Your motivation lessens when you only concentrate on the steps to get to your goal and forget the deep down reason for wanting to reach that goal in the first place . For instance, to picture yourself looking better, feeling better, or bragging to your friends is more motivating than just figuring out how to keep the chocolate out of reach or how to come home full on carrots. Don’t lose sight of the forest by looking only at a few trees. By thinking of the true end goal you will stay passionate and have the self discipline to reach your goal.

*Write your final goal, your successes, and your milestones in a journal and read them a few times a week. (Not everyday, so the excitement won’t wear off.

To be self disciplined and stay on target is without a difficult task, but buy using the tips above you surely have a much better chance to “make it”. Don’t you agree that it is worth the effort.
